Lip Balm Addiction Challenge

I don't know if I told you before, but I contribute to a site called All Women's Stalk. I recently wrote about the signs of lip balm addiction which was meant to be lighthearted and after doing some research, it seems like there are a few brands out there that actually have "addictive" substances such menthol, camphor or phenol that keep us coming back for more.

I'm a little obsessed with Carmex and that's one of the top lip balms that people get stuck on, the others were Chapstick, Blistex and Burt's Bees. I'm sure there are other brands that people can't get enough of but those were the top 4.

The advice from experts is to use a natural lip balm instead of ones that are "medicated" and contain ingredients that can dry out skin which leads you to keep applying more. For example, Carmex is made to dry out cold sores so while it feels good on, it's temporary and you'll need to keep applying more to keep your lips moisturized.

I've tried switching brands before and I've always come back to Carmex. So, I'm going to try to only use natural lip balms and moisturizers for a week and see what happens. I want to see how I feel, how my lips looks and feel and if I can switch to a different brand. I've been swapping coconut oil for lip balm the past couple of days but it seems like my lips just suck up all the moisture and it's a little uncomfortable. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

1/2013 UPDATE: I struggled with switching lip balms in the past like I've mentioned but this time, I meant business! So, I bought a tangerine EOS which isn't all that great. I hate that it has a slightly sweet flavor because it makes me want to lick my lips. Anyway, I really wanted to go back to Carmex the first few days. It was pretty hard, it was really cold and windy in LA these past weeks but I was steadfast in my attempt to quit Carmex.

So, it's been a few weeks since my original post and I've been regularly using EOS and have not went back to Carmex! Yes, it was hard but I'm so glad I stuck with it and I'm using a more natural lip balm. My next step will be to use less lip balm overall and use coconut oil or something similar.

Do you think you're addicted to lip balm?
